Among those who lift weights, back pain is one of the most common issues. There are many benefits to weight lifting, but there are also a lot of health risks. If you lift weights and feel weakness or numbness in your back, this could be a symtom of an injury brought on by the heavy lifting.

Many older people already suffer from degenerated or herniated disks, and so strenuous exercise such as weight lifting can cause problems to worsen. Improper lifting technique and repetitive strenuous activities are two things that can cause a herniated disk.

Exercises that can cause back pain:

  • Squats
  • Lying Torso Twists
  • Dead-lift
  • Lying Torso Twists
  • Clean-and-Jerk
  • Yoga Scorpioin Pose

Things you can do to prevent back pain caused by weight lifting:

  • Lift less weight and instead increase repetition
  • Use machines instead of free weights in order to keep the correct form
  • Do not perform heavy lifting with a spotter in case of sudden movements that can cause injury
  • Do not perform exercises listed above if you are prone to back injuries
  • Maintain good posture (at all times, not just in the gym)
  • Work the entire core region
Once again, it should be noted that there are benefits when it comes to weight lifting and your back. Weight training allows you to have a stronger core and stabilize and reinforce the spine. This reinforcement can also benefit people with previous injuries during recovery.
